CURLEW SANDPIPER Calidris ferruginea
Family Scolopacidae
Bird # 359 - March 2012
L 202mm (8 1/2")
migrant, fairly common
We saw these birds in the same area where we saw the Broad-billed Sandpipers. They look very similar. The Curlew Sandpiper has longer legs and a long decurved bill. The entire bill curves slightly downwards. With the Broad-billed Sandpiper, only the tip of the bill curves downwards. The Curlew Sandpiper is a taller looking bird.
Many thanks to Cebu-based British birder Steve Young for showing us these birds!
