This bird is listed as endangered by the IUCN because if has a very small, declining population. Estimates put the population from 1,000 to 1,700 birds. They breed in Japan and their main wintering area is in the Philippines.

Tonji saw two individuals flying together. There were reports that there were three birds. There were also reports that the bird has been returning to the same area for several years.
