Streak-Breasted Bulbul
STREAK-BREASTED BULBUL
Ixos siquijorensis
Family Pyncnotidae
L 265 mm (10 1/2")
endemic, endangered
Bird # 398 - February 2013
This bird is only found in Siquijor, Tablas, and Cebu. In Cebu, it is nearly extinct. In Siquijor and Tablas, it is common but threatened due to habitat loss. In the Kennedy guide, it says that they are found "in forest, forest edge, and second growth and occasionally in clearings in bushes, usually in groups at all levels of the forest". We saw them in the grounds of a beach resort in Siquijor. We heard from other birdwatchers that they are found in most beach resorts. It seems that they have adapted to life outside the forest.
The IUCN Red List category of this bird is endangered "because it has a very small, severely fragmented and declining range, and it is predicted to undergo a very rapid population reduction in the immediate future based on the decline observed in the past and a decline in the extent of its remaining forest habitat."
There are 3 races: cinereiceps in Romblon and Tablas, monticola in Cebu, and siquijorensis in Siquijor.
