Yellow Bunting
YELLOW BUNTING
aka Japanese Yellow Bunting
Emberiza sulphurata
Emberizidae Family
L 138 mm (5 1/2")
migrant, uncommon to rare
Bird # 399 - March 2013
This is a rare migrant that has been reported during migration season in Laoag by Richard Ruiz for several years. Richard has been seeing the birds in the same area over the years. They feed in the rice fields and then fly into the bamboo to rest for short periods. When in flight, they look brown and are difficult to distinguish from the Eurasian Tree Sparrows, Java Sparrows, and Munias that also frequent the area, although they are more slender than the Eurasian Tree Sparrows and munias. We saw two Yellow Buntings on the first day and only one on the second day.
