Turnix suscitator
Turnicidae Family
Bird #150 - April 2009
This is a resident bird. We first saw it in the UP Los Baños Dairy Farm. It was on the trail, but very far from us. It looks like a gray rock in our photos from that trip. Des Allen was the one who positively identified this bird. It was smaller and grayer than the Spotted Buttonquail.
We got our first decent photo four months later in Coron, Palawan in August 2009. We saw seven birds there but only got one photo. They were moving too fast.
In March and April 2011 we got a bonanza of Barred Buttonquails over several days in different areas in Laguna. Most of the photos here are our recent encounters with this species. We always enjoy our encounters with this species. They don't stay very long and can be very shy. Their speed and shyness make it a challenge to photograph them well.
