The Greater Coucal looks like a very large Philippine Coucal. It is only found in Palawan, parts of Mindanao, and Borneo. According to the Guide to the Birds of the Philippines, the Greater and Philippine Coucal only overlap on Basilan and Jolo. The Philippine Coucal does not occur in Palawan. The only coucals there are Greater and Lesser Coucal.
According to the Guide to the Birds of the Philippines, this bird is usally found in grassland, scrub, and edge in the lowlands. We first saw it on the in some tangles near the ground but photographed it high in a tree. The locals mentioned that there were many more of them in the mountains and that this one looked like a smallish Greater Coucal!
