Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Lesser Coucal
LESSER COUCAL
Centropus bengalensis
Family Cuculidae
L 355mm (14")
resident, common
Bird #172 - June 2009
One of the six coucal species found in the Philippines. It is the smallest one of the six. The immature has the most interesting plumage and makes it easy to id.
We saw our first Lesser Coucal in Ayala Alabang, Tonji had been suspecting that the Coucals in the empty lot near the Club were Lesser Coucals, so he went out to stalk them and get a photo. You can differentiate it from a Philippine Coucal by the "bright buff shafts on the wings".
We have since seen this species in many provinces.
