Little Bronze Cuckoo
LITTLE BRONZE CUCKOO
Chrysococcyx minutillus
Cuculidae Family
Bird #464 - September 2014
This is a Philippine resident.
L151mm , 6 inches
Described in the Kennedy Guide as rare and poorly known.
It is the smallest cuckoo in the world. It actually resembles a very small immature Asian Glossy Starling at first glance. But when the light hits the feathers on its back the bronze color is quite clear.
The red eye ring is found in the male. The female has a yellow eye ring.
It is supposed to be found in the lowland forest canopy. It is also probably in mangrove areas as well, the birds we were looking for were last seen in the mangrove area of Olango. We were also near some mangroves in Cebu when we saw this bird.
This bird has a repeating call but has a much softer call than the other bigger cuckoos like the Plaintive, Rusty Breasted or the Philippine Hawk.
