BARRED RAIL
Gallirallus torquatus
Rallidae Family
Bird #65 - November 2008
Tonji got a quick glance at this bird while we were in San Juan, Batangas. Later on we got a good look at it in Alabang and UP.
We saw this in the golf course of the Alabang Country Club. It was late afternoon and we were about to head back for home. As we walked past the water feature of hole #4, Tonji saw that 3 White Breasted Water Hens had come out into the open. We stopped to observe them. I was looking at one of the birds and thinking that it was probably a male Water Hen because it was very big and black. Then, I realized that it wasn't a Water Hen at all! It was a Barred Rail!
This bird is the tikling that the tinikling dance was named after. When my Dad was a young boy in Marikina, he used to shoot and eat this bird.
