Gallirallus striatus
Family Rallidae
Bird # 322 - June 2011
This is an uncommon Philippine resident. It is found in freshwater wetlands, ricefields, and drier grasslands. It is about 9 1/2 inches long. It has a chestnut crown and neck, black upper parts with barred and broken white lines, and white throat.
We were with Christian P when we saw these birds in a field of long grass. The edges of the field had been mowed down and we were able to see them when they would step out of the long grass onto the shorter grass. We returned to the field the next day to get another look, but there was a big machine cutting down the rest of the grass. It seemed unlikely that they would be in the same field and the rest of the fields were covered in very tall grass.
