There were only 6 previous records of this bird in the Philippines. It is a black bird with a deeply forked tail and a small white spot at the base of the bill . This is called a rictal spot. The individual we saw was an immature. The adult is all black. The immature has white edged feathers from the lower breast to the vent.
We were told that the bird likes to be out when the sun is out. So we did not need to wake up early to see this bird! We saw it repeatedly fly from a branch into the grass and then back to the same branch.
Our initial views were very distant. We had a lucky break that led to better photos. We were about to leave the site when Tonji decided to stop the car and take a phone call. While he was on the phone, the bird perched on the trees near the area where we were first standing. We were able to drive up to the bird and get better photos from inside the car.
