Eastern Spot-billed Duck
EASTERN SPOT-BILLED DUCK
Anas poecilorhyncha
Family Anatidae
Bird # 340 - October 2011
This is a large migrant duck. It measures 600 mm (23 1/2") in length. It is considered a rare visitor to the Philippines. We saw them in both Batan and Sabtang islands in Batanes.
On Batan Island, we first saw two Spot-billed Ducks flying overhead. Later, they landed in a big pond and immediately hid in the grass. They seemed wary and we had to stay far away behind some plants so they wouldn't get spooked and fly away. The next day we took a boat to Sabtang and saw 5 Spot-billed ducks. Two of the Spot-billed Ducks were very visible, standing out in the open, swimming and seemingly unconcerned with our presence.
