This is an uncommon migrant. It measures 355 mm (18"). The Kennedy guide describes this bird as "gregarious often mixing with other surface-feeding ducks". The lone male that we saw was indeed mixing with a Northern Pintail, Tufted Duck, and Spot-billed Duck.
Its red head is quite striking. The individual we saw was in eclipse plumage. It has a buffy crown stripe when it is in regular plumage.
