This is a chestnut brown diving duck. It has a very distinctive and conspicuous white butt. In birding terms, it is has white undertail coverts.
The reddish brown and white combination make it relatively easy to identify. Relatively, because we had Rob Hutchinson there to spot it and point it out. It was a far, far cry from our previous attempt to see this bird. In December 2017 we went to Candaba to twitch ta Ferruginous Duck. In my notes I wrote that "a twitch of the Ferruginous Duck turned out to be a 6-hour slog in the rain through muddy ricefields AND we didn't get a picture!"
