Gadwall
GADWALL
Anas strepera
Anatidae Family
Bird #348 - December 2011
Rare- Migrant
Length 510mm (20")
This bird is described as "rare" with 2 records in Kennedy's A Guide to the Birds of the Philippines. These are the first photos of Gadwalls in the Philippines.
They were mixed in with several hundreds of Philippine ducks. The white speculum was the first field mark that caught our eye. Then on closer inspection it had to be a Gadwall pair. It was a fantastic discovery coming just before the end of the year.
These birds are around the same size as a the Philippine Ducks. They were always hiding and we rarely got wide open looks of this bird, even with our scope. They put their heads under the water to feed with their tails sticking up to the sky.
