This bird is very common in the US and Europe but only accidental in the Philippines. The Kennedy guide says, "Caution! Do not confuse with domestic ducks in ricefields near humans. Call quack." A similar colored and more common bird is the male Northern Shoveler. The difference is that the breast of the Northern Shoveler is white and its bill is very large and grey. The Mallard has a brown breast and yellow bill.
Earlier this month, Tim Fisher had written in the WBCP egroup about an "exciting day in Candaba" where "The most exciting, though, were one individual Chinese Spotbill Duck and one male Common Mallard, both new birds for me for the Philippines. They, both, have only been recorded three or four times each, before. Both the latter were on the Lawyer's pond, which comprises the flooded area behind the Mayors ponds." We kept that in mind when we were checking out all the ducks in the pond. Initially, we were looking for a Tufted Duck since Tonji had seen that when he went to Candaba without me. Then, we saw the Mallard!
