Northern Pintail

Anas acuta
Family Anatidae
Bird #220 - December 2009
A fairly large bird at L (29 1/2") and a wingspan of (35"), it is larger than the Philippine Duck. The long neck in both sexes and the reddish brown head of the male make this an easy bird to spot. This is a migratory bird with a very large range capable of transoceanic flight.
This duck feeds by dipping its head in the water leaving its tail sticking out straight up. The male has a pointed tail, thus the scientific name acuta which means sharp. The Kennedy Guide lists this bird as uncommon. We have seen this bird in Candaba, Batanes, and Pagudpud.
