The only Philippine endemic duck. It is a large duck at 20 inches long. A Philippine duck mistakenly flew or got blown to Hong Kong, and was in the Mai Po Nature Reserve in March 7, 2010.
It has a population estimated at between 5000 to 10000 and is listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN red list. We have witnessed hunting of this species in Candaba and have seen evidence of a horrible shooting incident in Laoag. Between the threats from the hunters, pollution of the water and the pesticides this special duck needs the help, support and protection of all Filipinos.
It is unmistakeable with its sienna/ orange brown head and a taupe/dusty brown body. It has a distinctive dark almost black line thru the eye. The eye is dark brown. It has a bluish grey bill with a small black spot in the end. It has greyish black legs.
The speculum is iridescent, it changes color depending on how it catches the light. It can be different shades of aqua, a bright green or purple.
We first saw this in San Juan, Batangas at Prop Jerry's place. It is a beautifully colored duck with a pleasant, smiling expression. This duck is supposed to range all over the Philippines. We have since seen them in Pagudpud, Laoag, Arayat, Candaba, Paranaque and Rizal.
