This bird is described as "common" in Kennedy's <i>A Guide to the Birds of the Philippines</i>. We had seen photos of this pretty bird taken in faraway spots like Palawan and Leyte. We were excited to find out that they were reported in Candaba also.
When we first saw them, they were sitting quietly by the water. We didn't hear their characteristic whistle-like call that is described as sounding like a squeak toy. In later encounters we have heard their very distinctive call.
We have since seen these ducks in other places. The birds we photographed in Mindoro and Pagudpud were out in the open. Probably due to the water having less waterplants or maybe they are hunted less in those areas. There is only one race found in the Philippines arcuata. This bird can be found all over the Philippines.
