Bird #245 - February 2010
This is a Philippine endemic measuring about 3 3/4 inches long. It is uncommon and found above 800 meters. The male has a distinctive orange crown.
The group saw this bird first, perched in a faraway tree and pointed it out to us.
This is the race found in Mindanao kampalilia very possible future split. The belly of this bird is not all yellow like anthonyi, it is mostly white and grey. But look closely and the the belly has a faint streak of pale yellow running down the center.
We were able to watch the bird in Mt. Apo for some time. It was always carrying fruit but it was not eating it. We wondered if it had a nest or was looking for a mate and was displaying a love offering. It appeared to be ooking for a mate because it kept displaying itself for a long time in a clearly defined area.
