Luzon Water-Redstart
LUZON WATER-REDSTART
Rhyacornis bicolor
Family Turdidae
Bird #244 - February 2010
This is a Philippine endemic. It is a very striking and eye-catching bird. It is about 5 3/4 " long. It is an uncommon bird that is usually found by streams, perching on rocks to forage for insects. We saw a pair that was nesting near a construction site by the road. They seemed intent on defending their territory, notwithstanding the presence of bulldozers, cement mixers, and construction workers. The pair was spotted earlier in the month by JP Cariño, and was still in the same area when our group went up to Mt. Polis a few weeks later. Our group also returned to the area separately several times over several days and the birds were still there!
