This bird is around 10" long around half the size of a Philippine duck. It is considered uncommon but we have been able to see it quite often. It is one of our first species and a blurred photo of it in Candaba is one of our first photos.
It can be found in freshwater. We have observed it diving down for fish then appearing in a different spot. We have had our best looks of this bird in Candaba and Masantol, Pampanga. 3 races: philippensis (endemic) Apo, Bohol, Calayan, Camotes, Cebu, Guimaras, Luzon, Mindoro, Negros, Palawan, and Panay; cotobatoMindanao and Sanga Sanga subsp. Batan
