Brown Noddy
BROWN NODDY
Anous stolidus
Family Sternidae
Bird # 314 - May 2011
There are two kinds of noddies found in the Philippines, the Brown Noddy and the Black Noddy. The Brown Noddy is a resident bird. It is about 15 1/2 inches long, has a brown body, and blackish-brown tail and wings. Its head is grey that graduates down the neck into greyish-brown. Brown and Black Noddies look similar. The Brown Noddy is bigger and chunkier than the Black Noddy. Its beak is also heavier and is slightly decurved at the end. When it is sitting, the tail is longer than the wings and extends about 20% beyond the wings.
Brown Noddies nest in colonies. They nest on the ground, leaving the eggs in a shallow scrape among the pieces of string, plastic, and other debris littering the ground. We also saw them leave their eggs on top of low walls.
