Little Tern
LITTLE TERN
Sterna albifronsi
Sternidae Family
Length 10" (255mm)
Wingspan 22" (560mm)
Migrant-Uncommon
Bird # 349 - January 29, 2012
This is a small tern. It can be identified by its long fork tail and the yellowish base of its long, sharp bill.
When we saw them at the fishponds in Malalag, Davao del Sur, they were flying around and diving for fish so we were able to observe their distinctive flight. In the Kennedy guide it is described as "fairy-like with rapid wing beats, hovers before diving head first to catch prey." It also holds its beak pointing straight down into the water before it dives.
