Mew Gull
MEW GULL
Larus canus
Family Laridae
accidental migrant
L 40-46 cm
Bird #521 - February 2019
This is a migratory species that is found in many parts of the world. It is not listed in the Kennedy guide and was first recorded in the Philippines in December 2013 - January 2014. This species is sometimes also referred to as Kamchatka Gull or Common Gull. It is possible that the ones found in Asia will be split into Kamchatka Gull.
We went to the Pampanga River twice for this bird! On January 9 we went there because Rob H reported 2 gulls in the area. A Mew Gull and a Vega Gull. We went with Mel Tan and enjoyed an amazing spectacle of Black-headed Gulls, maybe 15,000 or 20,000 flying over us in the early morning light. It was very beautiful. Tonji was very excited when he found one big brown gull, but it was a Black-Tailed Gull, not a lifer. Exactly one month later we returned with Rob H and Mark B and Tonji was able to spot the Mew Gull among all the Black-headed Gulls!
