Bird # 472 - February 2015
This is a first time visitor to the Philippines. It was first photographed by Romy Ocon on January 9th and was only identified three weeks later. It is Romy Ocon's 2nd country record for 2015! This is a 1st winter Saunders's Gull.
It is a small gull that breeds in eastern mainland China and occasionally in the south-west coast of South Korea. It winters in eastern and southern China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, along the wetern and southern coast of South Korea, south-western Japan, and Vietnam. Its population is presumed to be declining due to habitat loss owing to land reclamation of tidal flats and salt marshes. from BirdLife International (2015) IUCN Red List for birds.
Rob Hutchinson said that it likes to feed on crabs. We saw it at low tide standing along the mud flats. There were a lot of people picking shellfish in the area.
