This species was split from Tarictic Hornbill Penelopides panini. In the treatment in the Kennedy guide, there were 8 races of Tarictic Hornbill. In the 2013 WBCP checklist which follows the IOC World Bird List (v 3.5), 5 of the races were treated as full species. The 5 species that were formerly known as Tarictic Hornbill are: Visayan Hornbill, Luzon Hornbill, Mindoro Hornbill, Mindanao Hornbill, and Samar Hornbill. Samarensis is found in Biliran, Bohol, Calicoan, Leyte, and Samar.
