Blue-capped Wood-Kingfisher
BLUE-CAPPED WOOD-KINGFISHER
aka Blue-Capped Kingfisher, Hombron's Kingfisher (IOC)
Actenoides hombroni
Family Alcedinidae
Bird # 271 - October 2010
This is an uncommon endemic. It is 11" long. It calls out the early morning. We saw it for the first time in Mt. Kitanglad. It was well before sunrise, when we heard it calling and Nicky was able to spot it perched high in a tree.
We saw it again in PICOP, Bislig. We were on the road and our guide Zardo Goring could hear it calling from down the hillside. He could not coax it up to our level. We eventually were able to spot it through the leaves and branches. It took some maneuvering and contortion of the body to get a shot! Zardo even offered his head as a tripod!
