Spotted Wood Kingfisher
SPOTTED WOOD KINGFISHER
Actenoides lindsayi
Alcedinidae Family
Bird #119 - February 2009
Endemic- Fairly Common
Length 254mm (10" inches)
Our first encounter with this bird was in UP Diliman in 2009. We were still digiscoping at the time. The bird stayed for quite a while and allowed a lot of us to get good looks.
Since that first encounter we have seen this bird again in Mt. Makiling, Sierra Madre and Negros Oriental. These birds always seem to be very relaxed and it is easy to get good views and photos of them. We have seen this bird in populated areas as well as in very isolated places.
It is a large Kingfisher and has a very distinct blue and orange feathers on its head. It gets its name from the spots its back. The race in Luzon is lindsayi and the race in negros is moseleyi. In the pictures below there are some differences in the chest feathers of the two races.
