Dimorphic Dwarf Kingfisher
DIMORPHIC DWARF KINGFISHER
Ceyx margarethae
Family Alcedinidae
L 145 mm (5 3/4")
resident, uncommon
Bird # 391 - January 2013
This is a small and difficult to find kingfisher. It is usually found in the low understory of lowland forest, usually associated with water.
This is called Variable Dwarf Kingfisher in the Kennedy guide. It was split fromCeyx lepidus.
Our first Variable Dwarf Kingfisher was taken with the help of bait and a hide. It is the only bird we have photographed this way and it is in all probability the last. We learned something about baiting and realized that it was not our type of photography. There are no photos of that bird in this gallery.
In 2015, we were able to see a pair in Camiguin. The photos below are from Camiguin. The locals call it sakiki lasang which translates to "wild forest".
