Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Eurasian Sparrowhawk
EURASIAN SPARROWHAWK
Accipiter nisus
Family Accipitridae
migrant, only one record
Bird #518 - November 2018
This bird was spotted by Robert Hutchinson during our first day in Batanes. It flew quite low over us and then down into the hillside. Rob was excited about seeing it because the fine barring all over the front of the torso looked good for Eurasian Sparrowhawk. He was able to take a photo that first day and get a confirmation of the ID from the experts. This is a country first record for the Philippines.
We were not able to get photos that first day. However, on the 2nd day Tonji spotted a raptor flying in the distance. He was able to photograph it. It was the Eurasian Sparrowhawk.
This is the description of the the bird in Robson's A Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia: Male: slaty-grey upperside, orange-rufous wash on cheks, faint orange-rufous bars on underparts and faint darker bands on uppertail, no mesial streak. Relatively long-winged and -tailed. Female: Larger, with whitish supercilium, browner-tinged upperside.
