Birds of the Philippines

Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.

Black Naped Monarch

BLACK NAPED MONARCH
Hypothymis azurea
Monarchidae Family

Bird #157 - May 2009

Length 150mm (6 ")
Resident, Common
Races: 2 azurea found everywhere and catarmanensis only in Camiguin Sur

Tina Mallari found this nest one week earlier. When she saw it, there were 3 baby birds in the nest. When we saw it, there were only 2 baby birds. Both the male and female were in the area. We only saw the female go to the nest.

In other places we have seen the male and the female both working on the nest. It is smaller than it seems in the photos. Its call has a buzz to it that makes it easy to identify in the field. Eventually we have seen this bird in many places from Luzon to Mindanao. It is our favorite bird in our cottage.

Desmond Allen said this is either an immature male or old female. Note that it has some blue on the back and doesn't have the black nape.
