Birds of the Philippines

Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.

Bird 323 - July 15, 2011

Tonji first saw this bird in Mt. Makiling in 2009 and had a very poor pictures of the encounter. We had a brief an unsatisfactory look at cinnamomea in Bislig in 2010. We did not tick off this bird because we were waiting for a satisfying look and a good photograph. Finally we got to see this bird very well and we are now officially ticking it in our list. Thanks to Jeanne and Iggy Tan for inviting us over to their wonderful place in Antipolo.

We were meeting up with Jeanne and Iggy Tan for dinner. A bird happened to bump into one of their glass windows in the morning of our dinner. Jeanne took some quick photos of it in her  household helper's hand before releasing it into their garden. That evening they showed us the photo of the bird. The photo was blurred but showed a rufous colored bird with a  blue ring around its eye! It was clearly a Rufous Paradise-Flycatcher! Jeanne and Iggy invited us to their house to look for the bird, as well as other birds in their "garden". Their large property nestles against the foothills of the Sierra Madre  and their "garden" looks more like a forest.

We got excellent views of this bird from their living room window. Our previous encounters with this bird showed it to be very noisy and vocal. Both previous encounters were with a mixed flock. The bird we saw in Antipolo was alone and did not vocalize. It did have the usual flycatcher behavior of returning to a previous perch or tree.

The race in Luzon is unirufa, it is an endemic race. This race is darker in color than the bird found in Bislig, Mindanao. It has a dark orange color that looks reddish orange when the sun hit the bird. It has a blue eye ring which is very distinct when the sun hits it. The other race found in the Philippines is cinnamomea.  It is lighter in color and has a white belly. It is usually found in lowland forest understory.

The  individual that we saw is a female. Des said, "Yes female. Very small blue eyering - not a big blue wattle".
