Great Eared Nightjar
GREAT EARED NIGHTJAR
Lyncornis macrotis Caprimulgidae Family
common, resident
L 350 mm (13 3/4")
Bird #252 - September 2010
This is described in the Kennedy field guide as the "most conspicuous of Philippine nightjars". The first time we saw this bird was in Rajah Sikatuna Park in Bilar, Bohol. It was circling over our heads as dusk fell. We took a photo of it in silhouette but could not put it in the website because the species was not recognizable from the photo.
We have also seen these birds in Banaue Hotel. They can also be seen from the hotel grounds circling overhead at dusk. They are also found in Subic, where we able to photograph it in 2015. There is what appears to be one individual that is known to perch repeatedly on a metal post while hunting for insects at night.
