Philippine Nightjar
PHILIPPINE NIGHTJAR
Caprimulgus manillensis
Family Caprimulgidae
Bird # 250 - May 2010
This bird is a Philippine resident. It is well-known among the birdwatchers in UP Diliman. In the Kennedy guide it says that they roost on the ground, but this one roosts in a tree. This bird is active at night and at twilight. It was asleep when we saw it, but it would open its eyes every so often and switch position and fluff its feathers. We also saw it rocking back and forth. Prop Jerry thinks it does this when the wind blows to mimic a leaf being blown by the wind.
It measures about 9 1/2" long. Its call sounds like "chuck churrr".
