The race of Philippine Oriole albiloris found in Luzon is treated as a separate species by some taxonomists. The other races are samarensis found in Bohol, Leyte, eastern Mindanao, and Samar; basilanicus found in Basiland and western Mindanao; cinereogenys in Bongao and Tawi-tawi; steerii in Masbate and Negros; and assimlis in Cebu. According to the Kennedy guide "the Cebu race has not been sighted since 1906 and is believed extinct or nearly so".
