Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Western Osprey
WESTERN OSPREY
Pandion haliaetus
Pandionidae Family
Length: 560 mm (22" inches) , Wingspan 1350mm (53"inches)
Migrant- Uncommon
Bird #171 - May 2009
This is called Osprey in the Kennedy guide. We went birding in the golf course thinking we would see the same old familiar birds. Instead, it turned out to be a very rewarding day because we had a lifer .. and a RAPTOR at that! We also had two additional Alabang photo lifers that day (Pacific Swallow and Large-Billed Crow), saw 2 kinds of very big turtles, and a bayawak (Monitor lizard) stalking a pair of White Breasted Waterhens! Just when you think you know what to expect from a familiar birding area -- you experience the unexpected!
Ospreys are resident birds of the Philippines. They are uncommon and feed exclusively on fish. A few months ago, Tina Mallari saw and photographed an Osprey flying over her house with a fish in its claws!
We have seen this bird in many places since our first encounters. They still remain a great treat to watch it as it tries to pluck a fish from the water.
