Mindanao Hawk Owl
MINDANAO HAWK-OWL
Ninox spilocephala
Family Strigidae
Bird # 439 - January 2011
This is a Philippine endemic. It was considered a race of the Philippine Hawk Owl and has recently been split. It is smaller than the Luzon Hawk Owl and has a barred breast, streaked lower underparts and spotted crown. It is found in Mindanao.
We first saw a Mindanao Hawk Owl in Bislig. We were walking up a trail when one of the porters suddenly ducked into the bushes, as if to check on something. Then he pointed out this owl that was quietly perched on a branch. It looked quite safe, even if it was asleep in the daytime as its perch was surrounded by long hard thorny leaves. It woke up and called out to another owl which answered back. We didn't see the second owl.
We have also seen the Luzon Hawk Owl and the Cebu Hawk Owl.
