Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Luzon Hawk-Owl
LUZON HAWK-OWL
Ninox philippensis
Family Strigidae
Bird # 294 - June 2011
This is a Philippine endemic. It is listed in the Kennedy guide as Philippine Hawk Owl, common in forest and forest patches. There are different races: reyi and spilonota are the largest while philpppensis, spilocephala, and mindorensis are the smallest. The other races are proxima, ticaoensis, centralis. Their patterns and voice also differ. Each race is found in a different province. The Kennedy guide says that "there may in fact be 2, 3 or more species represented in this group. The whole Philippine Hawk-Owl complex is currently under review".Just recently these owls have been split from the Philippine Hawk Owl.
Luzon Hawk Owl is now made up of three subspecies.
Ninox philippensis centralis (Bohol, Boracay, Carabao, Guimaras, Negros, Panay, Semirara and Siquijor)
Ninox philippensis philippensis (Biliran, Buad, Catanduanes, Leyte, Luzon, Marinduque, Polillo and Samar)
Ninox philippensis ticaoensis (Ticao)
The Luzon Hawk Owl has all-streaked underparts and plain crown.
We have seen it nesting in a tree cavity.
On a personal note we first saw a Luzon Hawk Owl in Laguna.

on November 1, 2013Hi Tardis, great daytime photo! Luzon Hawk Owl is the former Philippine Hawk Owl. It is found in Luzon. The other hawk owls are not on Luzon. So yours is the same. We also got ours in the Makiling area.
Regarding the splits, we are following the bird list of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines and IOC (currently v 3.5).
Thanks for visiting our site!

on October 30, 2013Hello, Tonji and Sylvia. Thank you for this informative page you got. I up Makiling this afternoon and I was wondering if we got the same bird. Here's the picture: https://z-n.ak.fbcdn.net/sphotos-e.ak/hphotos-ak-ash3/526544_10202124589387084_1384613864_n.jpg
Yes, it is really tricky to call which of the hawk-owls we got, as much as I would like to put the scientific name. More of this here: http://www.birdlife.org/asia/news/conservationists-recognised-splitting-philippine-hawk-owl-complex
