Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Spotted Wood Owl
SPOTTED WOOD OWL
Strix seloputo
Family Strigidae
L 432 mm (17")
resident, uncommon
Bird # 423 - May 2013
The Kennedy guide describes this bird as "uncommon, poorly known but generally found in forest, edge, and cultivated areas with patches of forest. Unmistakable within its range as it is only large owl in the forests of Palawan."
We saw this bird in a privately owned forest near the city. There was a family of two adults and one immature. We saw them in the daytime flying through the tree tops. They are very large. It is like seeing a big, brown raptor flying silently. The owners of the property frequently hear the birds calling at night.
