Red Junglefowl
RED JUNGLEFOWL
Gallus gallus
Family Phasianidae
Male:L 660 (26") with long tail feathers W230
Female: L420 (16 1/2") W195
Bird # 173 - April 2009
This is a Philippine resident. It looks very much like a domestic rooster. The main difference is that it has two long tail feathers. Its call is also similar to the cock-a-doodle-doo of a domestic rooster, except that the Junglefowl's call ends very abruptly. The first time we saw this bird we had a mini-debate about whether or not it was a domestic bird and ended up missing our chance to take its picture.
Since our first encounter we have seen this species several times. Sometimes they can be found walking around a newly cut field.
A good place to look for them is Subic. They like to feed as a family at first light.
One race philippensis(endemic) Balabac, Balut, Basilan, Bohol, Bongao, Busuanga, Cagayan Sulu, Camiguin Norte, Camiguin Sur, Calauit, Calayan, Catanduanes, Cebu, Culion, Fuga, Guimaras, Jolo, Leyte, Lubang, Luzon, Malamaui, Marinduque, Masbate, Mindanao, Mindoro, Negros, Palawan, Panay, Polillo, Romblon, Samar, Semirara, Sibuyan, Siquijor, Tablas, Tawi-Tawi and Ticao.
