Metallic Pigeon
Metallic Pigeon
Columbia vitensis
Batan Island, Batanes
Bird # 443 - October 2013
This is a large, dark pigeon. It has a deep call and is very shy. There are two races in the Philippines anthracina in Calauit, Comiran, Lumbucan, and Palawan and griseogularis in Basilan, Batan, Biliran, Cagayan Sulu, Calayan, Camiguin Norte, Camiguin Sur, Cebu, Dinagat, East Bolod, Guimaras, Jolo, Lapac, Leyte, Loran, Lubang, Luzon, Mindanao, Mindoro, Negros, panay, Romblon, Sabtang, Semirara, Sibutu, Sibuyan, Siquijor, and West Bolod.
We first saw this bird in October 2013 in Batanes. It was difficult to photograph and the best we could manage was a back view shot. Our next photography attempt was in Mt. Apo. There were two perched birds, but again photography conditions were bad. There were many branches in the way, little lite, and fog. So many excuses! Hope to get another chance to photograph this bird.
