Philippine Cuckoo Dove
PHILIPPINE CUCKOO DOVE
Macropygia tenuirostris
Columbidae Family
Bird #179 - June 2009
This is a Philippine endemic. It seems that the ones in the Philippines were originally a subspecies of the Reddish Cuckoo Dove but have now been split off into a separate species.
There were several of these birds. They looked very distinctive with their reddish color and long tails. We saw the septentrionalis race in Batan, Batanes and the tenuirostris in Zamboanga.
They are large birds fromm 355 to 408 mm (14-16").
