Blue-winged Pitta
BLUE-WINGED PITTA
Pitta moluccensis
Family Pittidae
L 200mm (8")
rare in the Philippines, migrant
Bird #513 - July 2018
This is an uncommon migrant to the Philippines. It was last recorded in the Philippines in 1907. Their range is Bangladesh to southwest China, southeast Asia to Australia, including Taiwan, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Borneo, and the Philippines. They breed in Thailand, Cambodia, and a few in Malaysia.
This particular individual was found by Rene "Tatay Eti" Vendiola at Liptong Woodlands. It is amazing that such a rare visitor would find its way to place of an amazing bird guide, tree expert, and conservationist. The bird was very relaxed and gave us great views while it was hunting for insects. It got frightened away by a rooster, but returned after the rooster went away. We did not hear it call.
