Tonji first saw this in the mangrove area in Sabang, Palawan. It is a resident bird and more common than the Red-Bellied Pitta. We finally got pictures in August 2009 when we saw it again in Coron, Palawan.
This species has three races. We have photographed two palawanensis we photographed in Sabang and Coron and sordida which we have photographed in Luzon and Mindanao.
Since then we have photographed it in Luzon and Mindanao as well. We even have a few residents in our farm.
A colorful looking bird that is usually difficult to see despite the bright red, blue and green because it like to hop around the ground. But when it calls out it can be seen easily because it chooses a higher vantage point.
We have seen it nesting in our farm with the nest low to the ground hidden in the grass.
