Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Philippine Pitta
PHILIPPINE PITTA
Pitta erythrogaster
Pittidae Family
Bird #170 - May 2009
Length 165mm (6 1/2" inches)
resident, fairly common
This is called Red-bellied Pitta in the Kennedy guide. It is now a near-endemic and called Philippine Pitta.
Our first views of this bird were in Palawan, propinqua in the mangroves of Sabang, then we got our first picture in Mt. Makiling of erythrogaster.
Then we saw it again in Batangas, La Mesa, and Quezon City in UP Diliman.
Our latest sighting was in Alabang from our bedroom window. We did not really believe the stories that there were Pittas in Alabang a long time ago. But there was the proof right outside our window.
Unmistakable bird, a very bright red belly, brown head, blue on the wing.
