Greater Sand Plover
GREATER SAND PLOVER
Charadrius leschenaultii
Charadriidae Family
Bird #54 - November 2008
We first saw this bird in San Juan Batangas. Could not tell the Lesser from the Greater in our first photos. Tim Fisher was there are said that there were Lesser and Greater Sand Plovers in the group with the Kentish Plovers. The Greater Sand Plovers are bigger and don't have the white feathers on the back of the neck. They also have a proportionately longer bill than the Lesser Sand Plover. I was told by WBCP member Felix Servita that the Greater Sand Plover's bill is 3/4 the width of its head, while the Lesser Sand Plover's is less than 3/4.
