Oriental Pratincole
ORIENTAL PRATINCOLE
Glareola maldivarum
Phalaropodidae Family
Bird #174 - June 2009
Oriental Pratincoles are both resident and migrant birds. They are usually found in groups in dry pastures, ricefields, and plowed fields. They catch insects both on the ground and in the air. They measure about 9" long. When not in breeding plumage, its black "necklace" on its chest is still present, but less defined.
We first saw this bird when we went to the Manila Bay area to take pictures of the Grass Owl. They were flying over us in small groups the whole morning.
The next time we saw them was in Candaba Swamp, Pampanga. There was a group of 15 on the muddy island in between the grass fields. They were near a group of 20 Yellow Wagtails.
