Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Asian Dowitcher
ASIAN DOWITCHER
Limnodromus semipalmatus
Family Scolopacidae
L 340mm (13 1/2")
migrant, rare
Bird # 328 - February 2010
The Kennedy guide describes this bird as "often with similar Bar-tailed Godwit but holds its heavier, all black bill downward when walking". The Asian Godwits have very long, straight, black bills. They can usually be seeing walking around in groups. The Asian Dowitcher, along with the Chinese Egret, is one of the flagship species of Olango Wildlife Sanctuary.
This was a belated lifer. An anonymous guest left a comment asking whether we had more pictures of the Asian Dowitchers that were shown in the foreground of one of our pictures. This prompted us to look more closely at the pictures! The anonymous guest turned out to be Steve Young, who we met when we went to Olango in March 2012.
