Birds of the Philippines
Photos and videos of wild birds found in the Philippines. We travel all over the Philippines to document and take pictures of birds. Our goal is to make this site a resource of information and images about wild birds of the Philippines.
Bukidnon Woodcock
BUKIDNON WOODCOCK
Scolopax bukidnonensis
Scolopacidae Family
Length 330mm( 13")
Endemic- Locally Common
Bird #95 - January 2009
This is a Philippine endemic. We first saw this bird in 2009 on Mt. Kitanglad, Bukidnon with the late Tim Fisher. It would fly across our "front lawn" of the birding lodge. Similar in shape with a snipe. it has a habit of calling out and flying around in a big circle early in the morning and after sundown. This behavior is called roding. Difficult to see because it flies by fast and in the dark.
We finally got some pictures on our third visit up Kitanglad in 2013. We had Nicky Icarangal with us who set up an area for us to get a good chance to photograph this bird. It is difficult to take a bird at night. It is even more challenging to photograph a fast moving bird in darkness. But we had luck and Nicky with us and we got some photos.
This species is new to science and was only described in 2001.
